Rodrigo has been one of the
elite senior riders at the Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre in
Lisbon, Portugal for the last 18 years. He trained with Nuno
Palma and currently works with Maestro Dr J Filipe Figueiredo
Graciosa, director of the Portuguese Riding School, whose own
Lusitano stallions he trains. He has taken an Arab Stallion to
Prix St George level and he also works daily with stallions from
the Alter-Real stud farm and serves as resident Director of the
Morgado School near Lisbon where he is responsible for training
up to 35 horses a day and is in charge of other assistant and
student trainees many who come from all over the world and have
varying degrees of riding proficiency. He is one of the most
sought-after clinicians throughout world, training top
competitive dressage riders and classical equestrians alike and
is clearly recognised as being one of the top trainers in the
World. Rodrigo has recently represented Portugal in Paris at the
unique and unprecedented performance of Classical Equitation at
the elegant Palais Omnisports. .
SBCDS was invited to extend Rodrigo da Costa Matos
visit at LAEC. We were very
privileged to have him work with us for three days at the
e beautiful setting of
Newport Farms in the Santa Ynez Valley. The clinic, beginning August 6th,
took off like a rocket, with riders coming from area's such as
Temecula and as far south as San Diego. Every slot in the three day schedule
was filled from 7 AM to 7 PM. For more information about

Vracko, "S" Judge from Woodville, WA, in her delightful
manner carefully instructed each horse and rider
combination at the Dressage Clinic co-hosted by
the SBCDS and the Beatons Westerly Stud Farm on July 30th and 31st. The two-day
event was fully subscribed by auditors and riders
alike. Kerstin Laudeman rode her 17-3h

instructor, Don Sachey's Cavaletti Clinic for the Dressage Horse at Modoc Ring on May12th and 13th was
educational and fun. Everyone enjoyed themselves,
including the horses.

As the clinic progressed
with the horses going through the exercises over the poles, the
action, animation and expression of their gaits improved. Don used a
combination of cavalletti ....staggering poles and
heights to encourage the horses to lower their heads and
lift their backs, stretching their top lines. It was
noticeable how cabalettas encourages balance and self
carriage.

organized a very special clinic and we thank Jedlicka's
for sponsoring the clinic and providing copies of
Klimke's book "Cavalletti " for the ones who got the
lucky folders at the preview on Friday evening.
